Screenplay : Naomi KAWASE

Synopsis

The Asuka region is the birthplace of Japan. Here, in ancient times, there were those who fulfilled their lives in the midst of waiting. Modern people, apparently having lost this sense of waiting, seem unable to feel grateful for the present, and cling to the illusion that all things will move constantly forward according to one’s own plan.

In ancient times, there were three small mountains that people believed were inhabited by gods. They were Mt. Unebi, Mt. Miminashi, and Mt. Kagu, and they still stand. In that time, a powerful official used the mountains as a metaphor for a struggle inside his own heart. The mountains were an expression of human karma.

Time has passed into the present. Takumi and Kayoko, inheriting the unfulfilled hopes of their grandparents, live out their lives. Their tale continues a story of the ages, representing the uncountable souls that have accumulated in this land.

NEW IMAGES AND INTERNATIONAL POSTER RELEASED

Copenhagen, 28 April 2011 The official website for Lars von Trier’s MELANCHOLIA has been re-launched with new stills from the film and a first look at the international poster.  MELANCHOLIA will receive its world premiere in competition at the Cannes International Film Festival (11-22 May) marking the Danish director’s 11th Cannes selection.  His previous contenders include Palme d’Or and Best Actress winner Dancer in the Dark and Grand Prix winners Breaking the Waves and Europa.   Charlotte Gainsbourg who co-stars alongside Kirsten Dunst and Kiefer Sutherland in MELANCHOLIA received the 2009 Cannes Best Actress award for von Trier’s Antichrist.

Running time:                          91 minutes

Annabel Cotton (Mia Wasikowska) is a beautiful and charming terminal cancer patient with a deep felt love of life and the natural world.  Enoch Brae (Henry Hopper) is a young man who has dropped out of the business of living, after an accident claimed the life of his parents.  When these two outsiders chance to meet at a funeral, they find an unexpected common ground in their unique experiences of the world.  For Enoch, it includes his best friend who happens to be the ghost of a Kamikaze fighter pilot.  For Annabel, it involves an admiration of Charles Darwin and an interest in how other creatures live.  Upon learning of Annabel’s imminent early passing, Enoch offers to help her face her last days with an irreverent abandon, tempting fate, tradition and even death itself.

As their unique love for each other grows, so do the realities of the world that they have felt closing in on them.  Daring, childlike, and distinctly rare – these two bravely face what life has in store for them.  Fighting pain, anger and loss with youth, playfulness and originality, these two misfits turn the tables on life and play by their own rules.  Their journey begins to collide with the unstoppable march of time, as the natural cycle of life comes to claim Annabel.

Directed by Gus Van Sant, RESTLESS follows Annabel and Enoch’s complex and moving journey together as it culminates in their acceptance of themselves. The relationships they share with their friends, families and each other teach them their greatest lessons of all – that every end begets its own kind of rebirth, and love is deathless.

But when events take a tragic turn, just how far will the women go in order to prevent bloodshed and turmoil?

THE PR CONTACT

Cannes Film Festival 2011

The daily grind for the cops of the Paris Police Department’s Juvenile Protection Unit…

Mother and son reunion: Jonathan Couette takes Renee on a road trip across the US…

A musical giant…how one of jazz music’s most supremely gifted performers overcame devastating handicaps to become a true musical legend…

All eyes on Brazil’s Karin Aïnouz as he teams with legendary composer Chico Buarque for a romantic odyssey set in Rio, cinema’s current favourite city…

Korea’s top director uncovers a startling World War II story and turns it into the biggest Pan Asian production of all time…

All hush in the cinema:  forget 3-D and Lucas Sound, the black and white silent movie is making a dazzling and joyous return…

From the North and South Americas, though Europe, and across to Asia, PR Contact invites you to take a road trip with us this Cannes Festival.  The gritty inside world of Paris’ juvenile protection force as viewed by French director Maïwenn sits side by side with the battlefields of World War II of Korean director KANG Je-kyu’s currently shooting epic, My Way. Jonathan Couette intoxicatingly mixes visual forms while France’s Michel Hazanavicius retires agent OSS 117 to pay glorious homage to Hollywood’s silent era.  And music is the common factor between Michael Radford’s moving portrait of jazz legend Michel Petrucciani and Karim Aïnouz’s O Abismo Prateado (The Silver Cliff), inspired by one of composer Chico Buarque’s best loved songs Olhos nos Olhos and being at the same a film love letter to his city of Rio.

We look forward to seeing you in Cannes from May 10.

“People don’t understand that to be a human being it isn’t necessary to be six feet tall. What counts is what you have in your head and in your body. And particularly what you have in your soul.” – Michel Petrucciani

Michel Petrucciani was a startling and original man, both by the nature of his physical condition and of his outstanding musical talent. This is the story of how he achieved fame and fortune through his indomitable will and force of personality. If the definition of true greatness is the realization of something that seems beyond human aspiration, then Michel Petrucciani had greatness in spades.

Born with glass bone disease, and standing three feet tall as an adult Michel Petrucciani overcame extraordinary obstacles to become an internationally acclaimed jazz artist. Giving his first professional concert at the age of 13, he rapidly ascended to the heights, playing alongside some of the world’s finest jazzmen.

Through a wealth of interviews and riveting archival material MICHEL PETRUCCIANI: tells the remarkable story of a man driven by an insatiable and all-consuming hunger for life and all it has to offer – travel,

women, art – a supremely talented force of nature who defeated devastating handicaps to become a true musical giant.

WORLD LAUNCH – IN PRODUCTION

Leading Pan Asia cast fronts biggest ever budget Korean Production

MY WAY (Korea)

Directed by: KANG Je-kyu (The Ginko Bed, Swiri, Taegukgi)

Starring: JANG Dong-gun, ODAGIRI Joe, FAN Bingbing

Asia Release: December 2011

TALENTS AVAILABLE FOR INTERVIEWS IN CANNES:

KANG Je-kyu, Director

JANG Dong-gun, Actor

ODAGIRI Joe, Actor

FAN BingBing, Actress

The story began with one, small photograph. The photograph, which had been kept in the U.S. National Archives emerged on an internet site related to World War II.  In the picture, there is a small Asian man wearing Germany army uniform.

The picture was taken in 1944, at the time the Western Allies invaded France. American soldiers discovered the Asian man in German uniform among the POWs in Normandy. No one knew what language he was speaking.

Director KANG Je-kyu’s MY WAY, currently filming, is based on a remarkable true story which brings a new dimension to the history of Asia’s involvement in World War II. The story of how one man came from Korea to Russia, Germany, then Normandy…”

Nearing the end of a marathon eight month shoot which has taken the 200 strong crew to Latvia and Korea, the film brings together a stellar Pan Asian cast including Korea’s JANG Dong-gun,  Japan’s ODAGIRI Joe, and leading Chinese actress FAN Bingbing,

JANG Dong-gun plays the Korean soldier thrown into the maelstrom of war and whose journey across battlefields of war half way around the world is an epic tale of survival. ODAGIRI Joe is the Japanese childhood friend who faces his friend again on the battlefields of Normandy. FAN Bingbing is the Chinese civilian who takes revenge for the killing of her family by staging a single-handed guerrilla fight again the Japanese army.

.

Director KANG’s war epic promises to out-scale his previous blockbuster Taegukgi which re-wrote Korean film history by drawing more than 12 million to the box office.  My Way’s budget, at US$30 million, is the most expensive Korean funded production to date.

CJ Entertainment will launch MY WAY in Cannes on the first weekend of the festival, May 14 & 15, bringing the director and cast in from their Latvia location to unveil early footage of the work in which we can expect to see director Kang’s ‘extraordinary recreations of the land, sea and air battles of World War II’ filmed, according to insiders, ‘on an inconceivably colossal scale’.

Director KANG’s MY WAY will have a simultaneous Korea-China-Japan release this December.

English >>> At Night, They Dance is one family’s story. The film takes us into the heart of a clan of women, in which the art of belly dancing has been passed down from mother to daughter since time immemorial. A gritty film in which raw beauty triumphs over the harshest realities.

Bonjour Festival-goers!

It’s back to the Croisette for us soon and I’m still busy preparing, but here’s the lowdown on my Cannes films (by date of play):

STOPPED ON TRACK (HALT AUF FREIER STRECKE)
directed by Andreas Dresen: I’m sure that most of you remember the terrific CLOUD 9 that Andreas Dresen presented in A Certain Regard a few years ago. Mr Dresen has made an equally moving new film about a family dealing with the father’s terminal illness. I was particularly fascinated by the attitude toward death, the reality of home care. Tough subject matter, but it won’t ruin your day. Amazing acting.

TATSUMI
directed by Eric Khoo: I didn’t know who Yoshihiro Tatsumi was until I saw this film, so I thank Eric Khoo for giving a wonderful screen introduction to this great Japanese comics artist, his life and his works. It’s part biopic with passages from Mr Tatsumi’s life and career and there are 5 of his fictional short stories. All purely wonderful animation! Sit back and enjoy! Not really for kids, which is what Mr Tatsumi and his work is all about.

OSLO, AUGUST 31ST
directed by Joachim Trier: I knew absolutely nothing about this film and it blew me away, so I won’t tell you too much. I’ve since seen Mr Trier’s equally excellent REPRISE and I’m just as impressed, and even more with the director himself, as I get to know him and his approach to filmmaking. Outstanding lead performance. Captivating film. It reaches deep inside.

HARA-KIRI: DEATH OF A SAMURAI
(ICHIMEI) directed by Takashi Miike: Yes, Takashi Miike is back already with a new film after presenting 13 ASSASSINS in Venice and Toronto only a few months ago. This one’s an epic, too, but much more a nod to the traditional Japanese cinema of yesteryear. Breathtakingly beautiful… Oh and it’s the first 3D film in the Cannes competition. Get your glasses on! And pull out your hankies, it’s a tearjerker.

I’m pleased to say that I have updated WWW.FILMPRESSPLUS.COM! I’ll be adding materials (photos, press kits, TV excerpts, music tracks) as they become available. Hope this helps make things easier for you to cover my films… And I may start to finally blog. I know I keep threatening to and I never get around to it, but it just might happen this time. Encourage me🙂

Wishing you all a great festival!

see you soon,

HANEZU NO TSUKI

A film by Naomi KAWASE (91 minutes)

The Asuka region is the birthplace of Japan. Here, in ancient times, there were those who fulfilled their lives in the midst of waiting. Modern people, apparently having lost this sense of waiting, seem unable to feel grateful for the present, and cling to the illusion that all things will move constantly forward according to one’s own plan.In ancient times, there were three small mountains that people believed were inhabited by gods.

(met name Erik, en Jan Pieter) vanavond is echt de limiet, morgenochtend stuur ik de nominaties door.
